Russian Olive

Scientific Name :
Elaeagnus angustifolia
Family :
Elaeagnaceae
Genus :
Elaeagnus

Though its common name suggests that the plant is an olive with Russian origin, it is neither from Russia nor an olive variety. It originates in the drylands of central Asia and it is in the Elaeagnaceae family. It can survive in harsh cold environment and the leaves look like olives and that is how it was named Russian olive. Faintly yellow small flowers blossom in early summer and with its elegant smell, it is said that it was also loved by the famous Chinese Princes Yang Kuifei. The red fruits had also long been used to make jam and syrup. What is unique of Russian olives is the color of its leaves. The silvery color stays even when its dried so it can be enjoyed for a longer span at home.
