Slow Flower of The Month

Amethyst Sage

Amethyst Sage

Scientific Name :
Salvia leucantha
Family :
Genus :

True to its name, the amethyst sage’s most prominent feature is its amethyst-hued purple calyx. When in season delicate white flowers bloom from this purple calyx.

Its scientific name is said to be derived from the Latin “salvare (heal)” and “salveo (health),” and has historically been used in medicine. Amethyst sage has medicinal properties, but is more commonly known today as an ornamental plant. Its purple calyx is covered with fine fur, and from its velvety texture comes amethyst sage’s other name, velvet sage.

The sight of vividly colored stems swaying in the breeze against the sky is a sight to behold, and lets us know the coming of the summer months.
